MUSIC: DREA G'S HIP HOP WOMEN'S PLAYLIST WEDNESDAYS
From the onset of G.R.I.T.S. and the City, I knew that I wanted music to play a vital part in our messaging and show. As a huge fan of music and a former writer for entertainment platforms like Hot 97, In Flex We Trust, The Source, Vlad TV, and more. It is only right that I weigh in on the current state of music, and the enormous role and opportunity women will have as we continue to move forward into the future.
For a period of 9 years, one woman reigned supreme in the rap game. From 2009 to 2018, Young Money’s first lady, Queens emcee, Nicki Minaj managed to keep a foothold in the game and become one of the biggest commercially successful female entertainers in Hip Hop and history to date. Fast forward to 2020, and women emcees are growing by leaps and bounds. Whether we’re talking about the monumental success of Cardi B’s 2018 project, Invasion of Privacy, or Missy Elliot being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Or perhaps the multifaceted Lizzo, who snagged the most Grammy nominations in 2020, as a solo artist, leading the pack with eight nominations, taking home three.
More and more, women in Hip Hop are proving that we are a force to be reckoned with. From the rookies to the vets, the All Hail the Queens playlist explores women in Hip Hop and pays homage to dope femcees past, future, and present.
